the worst kind

Have you ever had a migraine? If you’re hesitating in your answer right now, then you haven’t. It is an awful experience and one I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Really, not anyone. The only thing it compares to is the worst hangover you’ve ever had, plus a few other terrible symptoms occasionally thrown in.

I’ve been fortunate that my migraines are mainly caused by two things – extreme stress and hormone changes. When I was working, I had a few a year – due to stress. While pregnant, I also had a few – due to hormone changes. So, since I’ve been home with C and had a significant reduction in stress, that trigger hasn’t been an issue. And, since C doesn’t currently have a sibling on the way, I’ve been spared from that trigger as well.

I didn’t expect to experience migraines as a side effect from a medication I started recently. Of course I would get the random side effect that no one else gets. The medication affects hormone levels, so I guess I should have seen it coming. It doesn’t affect hormones in the same manner as pregnancy does, but it’s having the same end result. And, my, is it awful.

If you’re not familiar with the ins and outs of migraines, I’ll give you a brief run down. Think light sensitivity. Think nausea. Think noise sensitivity. Think vice like pain encompassing your head. Actually, just don’t think at all, as migraines generally affect the ability to process thoughts. I’m not sure if that’s a medically documented side effect or just incidental to the fact that all of your focus is elsewhere, but I have issues using my brain during a migraine. I also sometimes experience the light aura and tunnel vision that comes with a traditional migraine, but those symptoms are usually rare for me.

I’ve had a pretty terrible migraine for the past few days with little reprieve. Excedrin has been my go to in the past. Unfortunately, it’s not doing much for me these days, other than making me jittery from the caffeine. Coupled with the fact that I’ve been waking up from my migraines during the middle of the night (usually hovering around 4 am), I’m pretty disgusted by the whole thing. I’m sleep deprived, as I’m either awake due to the migraine or awake due to the Excedrin. Bah.

Yup. Migraines suck. I hope you never have to find out how much.

Ugh. That really blows. I hope it clears up soon! Hopefully a drink tomorrow and some chatting it up will help :-)

Donna gets a lot of migranes. After trying pretty much every treatment on the market, she’s found the only thing that seems to work on them is sumatriptan nasal spray (Imitrex/Imigran). It’s not 100% effective, but a lot of the time it clears them up pretty fast.

Good to know. Hopefully these will clear up more that I’m off the offending meds. Normally they’re occasional and fairly easy to sleep away. These ones, not so much.
