I picked up a recent copy of SNR featuring a cover story called “The Chemistry of Beauty“. It discussed the chemicals and toxins used in beauty products – most of which are completely unnecessary.
I did some additional research on The Cosmetics Database and found that most of my products don’t make the cut. It was really disappointing to see that the culprit in most of my products was the fragrance. FRAGRANCE. Completely unnecessary in my opinion. I seek out items that are as unscented as possible – too many manufactured scents make my head spin.
The Cosmetics Database features the “Skin Deep” safety guide to cosmetics created by researchers at the Environmental Working Group. The group has researched and tested products to determine their toxicity and harm levels. “Skin Deep pairs ingredients in more than 25,000 products against 50 definitive toxicity and regulatory databases, making it the largest integrated data resource of its kind. Why did a small nonprofit take on such a big project? Because the FDA doesn’t require companies to test their own products for safety.”
I’m amazed at how many of these toxins are neurotoxins (affecting the brain), developmental/reproductive toxicity (affecting fertility) and cancer causing. All for the sake of beauty?? No thank you. I’ll be transitioning over to the non-toxic variety.
It’s interesting stuff… hope you enjoy!
