Back to my old ways…

I wrote this one back in January…. it’s finally making it’s debut…

With Ben out of town, it’s amazing to me how easily I fall back into my old routine. Popcorn for dinner, long baths, blogging frequency increases, suddenly I’ve hopped back in to the world of the internet and gotten up to date on my reading. While I’m enjoying this rare alone time, the emptiness of this big house and the fact that Ben’s not here is more than noticable.

I’ve never been afraid of living alone. I’ve lived alone off and on since I graduated from college, and I’ve always been fine with it. But since I’ve lived with Ben, things are different. I’ve gotten used to him being here – feeling secure and safe, and just being around as a companion. Now when he’s gone, it bothers me.

To add to the situation, the Sacramento Sheriff department uses the helicopter quite a bit when they’re out searching for someone, and they seem to be on the search in our area nightly. It isn’t until you’re alone that you realize the frequency of their searches, and the proximity to your house. I actually had a dream about a helicopter cornering Ben & I in the back yard – we were the culprits they were after, and they hovered no more than 20 feet above us with their spot light blinding us. I’m thinking it was brought on by the two patrols the went past earlier that evening.

On the flip side, I’m actually much more creative in my cooking when I’m eating alone. It’s easier to try new things when the only critique is your own. I made a veggie stir fry with a soy teriyaki sauce tonight. It was quite yummy. I’m considering whipping up a batch of my “Diet Coke Cake” (containing just box of cake mix & a can of diet soda – mix together, follow the box directions for cooking and enjoy!).

It’s a shame – as I write this I know that it won’t see the light of day for at least a week… while I’m not afraid of being home alone, I’d still rather not advertise it to the world while it’s happening.

Ahhh…. procrastination

Once again, I’m studying for the CPA exam. This is in the grand scheme, as obviously, I am not actually studying at this moment. I find all kinds of time for tasks that I usually let fall to the wayside when it’s time for me to crack open the books. Dishes get done, toilets get scrubbed, my checkbook gets balanced – you’d be amazed.

So, to state things more correctly – I should be studying right now. I reached the end of a chapter and decided it was time to blog instead. Besides the fact that it’s 10:17pm and I have to go into work early tomorrow, and starting a new chapter would be pointless. Studying for the CPA is similar to reading a lawbook – unless you’re fully engaged in reading the material, it’s quite easy to glaze over and waste an hour while retaining nothing.

Ok, time to surf the internet now… ttfn!

Music Time

We went to the Arcade Fire concert in Berkeley last night. They put on a good show – sounding much like their album and putting a good stage presence out there.

I visited Berkeley a bit when my brother went to school there, and then again later when I lived in the bay area, so I have a few local places that I know and love… one of which is Zachary’s Chicago Pizza. We attempted to go to Zachary’s last night, but due to the size of our group (there were 10 of us) and the timeline for being at the concert, it didn’t work out like I’d hoped.

We opted to park the van at the concert and venture out into the city on foot instead. I had a few other places marked out on a map, and a pretty good idea of how to get there, but when I asked directions from a local Berkelian, they looked at me like I was on dope for wanting to walk that far. Few options remaining, we headed down the hill to see what we could find along the way.

Luck was with us, as we came upon a pretty tasty pizza by the slice place, and sat down to devour our dinner and enjoy some beer.

The show ended late, and we finally made our way home around 2am – it was a long night, but it was worth it – a great show, some tasty eats and a good group of people.
